Writing test (SLP 2222)

Below you will find original writing tests from several examination papers. During English exams according to STANAG 6001, you have also answer sheets supplied, where you are supposed to write on. That is why it is advisable to practise handwriting and clear writing without many corrections. Otherwise you will lose much time on copying your texts on additional sheets of paper. For both tasks you have 75 minutes only.

 Level 2 writing test

Task One

Choose one of the following topics. You should write between 120 and 150 words.

1.      While working on a mission in Afghanistan your platoon had a friendly-fire incident. No one was seriously hurt, but there were minor injuries. Write a letter back to your friend in Poland and describe what happened. Give as much detail as you can.

2.      While you were staying at your friend’s house in London, you left one of your bags there. Write an email to him/her and a) describe the bag and its contents  b) ask him/her to send it to Poland  c) suggest paying for postage d) apologize for all trouble.

Task Two

You must do this task. Write between 120 and 150 words.

You were coming back from work. You witnessed a road accident in which a soldier from your unit was involved. Write a report to the local MP department and include the following:

  • time and date
  • weather conditions
  • how it happened
  • whose fault you think it was and why
  • rescue operation by emergency services

Task One

Choose one of the following topics. You should write between 120 and 150 words.

1.      You are planning a holiday with your family. Write a letter to your friend inviting him/her to spend it with you. Suggest renting a house together and say why it is a good solution. Write about the length of the holiday and the attractions of the place you’ve chosen.

2.      You have recently retired. Write a letter to your friend telling him/her about the retirement party in your company and the presents your co-workers gave you. Describe your plans for the future. Invite your friend to take up a new hobby with you.

Task Two

You must do this task. Write between 120 and 150 words.

You are the Head of the Administration Department in the Military Language Training Centre. Write a report to your CO informing him about the following:

  • more courses / next academic year
  • administration staff / teachers – more needed (how many? / why?)
  • teacher training – more money needed
  • new equipment necessary – say what kind / how much
  • student accommodation / rooms – bad condition / renovate?

Task One

Choose one of the following topics. Write between 120 – 150 words.

1.      You have recently been to a class reunion. One of your friends couldn’t come to the meeting because he/she was ill. Write a letter telling him/her who was at the reunion, where it was held and what was good and bad about it. Suggest that your friend should come to another class meeting. Say when and where it could take place.

2.      Your friend from Britain is going to come to your unit for a six-month post. Write an e-mail expressing your satisfaction at your future co-operation. Tell him about his new duties and suggest ways of spending free time during his stay.

 Task Two

You must do this task. You should write between 120 and 150 words.

On your way back from an exercise, you had some pieces of equipment stolen from your vehicle which was parked at a service station. Write a report to your CO and include the following:

  • what items were stolen (describe them)
  • how it happened
  • problems with vehicle security
  • suggested solutions for the future

Task One

Choose one of the following topics. Write between 120 – 150 words.

1.      You’re getting married in six months. Write a letter to your English friend inviting him/her (with a partner) to your wedding party. Write about your wedding arrangements (time, location, guests). Ask your friend to let you know if he/she’s coming. Offer to make reservations and cover the costs.

2.     A British soldier (of the same rank) has recently finished a six-month exchange post in your unit. Write a letter, thanking him for his work and offering to keep in contact. Suggest a meeting in the summer while your unit has an exercise in Britain. Write what kind of exercise it is going to be and when.

Task Two

You have just completed a language course. Write a report  to your CO describing the course and giving your opinion about it. Include the following points:

  • date and length of the course
  • classes (size/quality)
  • number of hours per week
  • accommodation
  • facilities on site
